7 signs your business's marketing needs help

Marketing rarely fails overnight. It drifts slowly, through small signs that are easy to ignore. These are the seven I see most often.

A business's marketing rarely fails from one day to the next. It drifts slowly: a message that no longer matches what you do, a channel that stopped bringing clients, a tool nobody uses. Each sign on its own seems small. Together, they cost months and money.

2. You don't know where your last clients came from

If the answer is I think it was Instagram, you are deciding blind. Without knowing what works, you can't do more of it.

3. Everyone explains the business differently

You say one thing, the website says another, whoever answers the phone says a third. Clients feel the difference, even if they can't name it.

4. You change strategy every month

One month it is video, the next it is email, then ads. Nothing lasts long enough to produce results or to teach you anything.

5. Your website gets visits but nobody gets in touch

People arrive and leave. The problem is usually the clarity of the offer or the path to contact, rarely the colour of the buttons.

6. You pay for tools you don't use

Schedulers, email platforms, client management software. If they are paid for and idle, they were bought to solve a problem that wasn't about tools.

7. Marketing depends only on you

If you stop for a week, everything stops. That isn't a lack of dedication. It is a lack of structure: a plan, a rhythm and priorities that don't live only in your head.

What to do if you recognised yourself

One or two signs are normal. From three onwards, it is worth stopping before you invest more money or time. Pick the sign that costs you most and ask: which decision is waiting to be made here? The answer is almost always about the offer, the audience or priorities, not about channels.

Where to start, sign by sign

Each sign has a simple first step:

  • The wrong enquiries: review your offer and who you are talking to.
  • You don't know where clients come from: start asking and noting it today.
  • Everyone explains the business differently: write the sentence for your offer and share it with everyone who talks to clients.
  • A new strategy every month: make a three-month plan and don't change it before the end.
  • A website without enquiries: review the most visited page and the path to contact on a phone.
  • Unused tools: cancel anything you haven't used in the last three months.
  • Everything depends on you: write down what you do each week so someone else could do it.

When the signs are connected

If you recognise four or more, or you have already tried to fix the same signs more than once without results, they are probably connected. That is where a diagnostic saves time: instead of putting out seven fires, it finds what is starting them.

Common questions

Do these signs apply to small businesses?
Yes. They show up in someone working alone as much as in a company with a team; only the scale changes.
Do I need a full diagnostic?
Not always. Sometimes fixing one thing is enough, such as the main message or the path to contact. A diagnostic makes sense when several signs appear at once and you don't know where to start.
How do I find out where clients come from?
Ask every new client how they found you and write it down. Add the data from Google Analytics and your Google profile. After two months you have a pattern.
How often should I check these signs?
Once a quarter is enough. Put it in your calendar and answer honestly. Comparing with the previous quarter shows whether you are improving or just swapping one problem for another.
